SUMMARY:WRUW-FM presents The Blue Stones w/ JJ Wilde and The Dead Licks
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate WRUW’s 53rd birthday at the Grog Shop and B-Side Lounge! Starting at 7:00\, there will be a free pre-party at the B-Side featuring free pizza\, drink specials\, and more. Then at 8:30\, come join us in the Grog Shop for The Blue Stones with JJ Wilde and The Dead Licks. \n  \nNot having a third member to fill another rhythm role\, the Windsor\, Ontario based duo developed an original characteristic to the sounds of the bands that influenced them\, such as Kings of Leon\, My Morning Jacket\, MUTEMATH and The Black Keys. “We never had a bass player in our early jams\, so we subconsciously compensated for one in the music\,” says guitarist/vocalist Tarek Jafar. \nApparently it’s worked\, the group has reached top-level sales on the popular Bandcamp.com as well as garnering over one million spins on Spotify. The duo’s music has also been featured numerous times on major network television shows such as Suits\, Parks and Rec and Monday Night Football . \nMore importantly\, crowds across Canada and hometown-neighbouring Detroit\, MI have been stunned by the energy and force behind their loud\, dominant live performances—especially for just two dapper guys. The Blue Stones create a killer hi/lo effect; contrasting their slick and put together look with their rough and rollicking live show. Heart\, soul and sweat characterize every Blue Stones spectacle – you can’t help but be pulled in from the moment the first note is played. \nThe two are elated to have played with premiere acts and in national festivals; however\, they’d like to achieve an even greater reach to bigger audiences around all of North America and the world. “We love this too much to keep it hid in southwestern Ontario.”

SUMMARY:175th Cleveland Saint Patrick's Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 17th will mark the 175th Anniversary of the Cleveland Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. WRUW’s very own Roger Weist\, host of Beyond the Pale Sunday’s 4pm-6pm\, was named Grand Marshall! Join Roger and other staff members of WRUW to take part in a Cleveland Tradition. \nFor information on start time\, the parade route and more visit Cleveland’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade website or facebook. \nTaken from their website: \nRoger S. Weist – 2017 Grand Marshal \n \n\n\nRoger was born in Cleveland\, Ohio on August 13\, 1952\, to Robert L. and Angela Stanton Weist. His father died when Roger was 4 years old. A few years later\, his Mother married widower Jim Kerrigan. Jim and Angela then raised Roger along with his now 17 brothers and sisters. Roger is retired from Cleveland Municipal Court\, where he served as Personal Bailiff for Judge Kathleen Ann Keaough. Currently serves as Music Director at WRUW radio\, and\, for the last 17 years\, host of Beyond the Pale Radio on Sunday afternoon. \nRoger has been an active and highly visible member of Cleveland’s Irish community for over 38 years. What began as a love of Irish music\, song and story developed into an activism for the promotion of the ideals of Hibernianism\, and for the promotion of peace\, justice\, and unification of the island of Ireland. A member of the Boland/Berry Division 2\, Cuyahoga County\, Ohio\, he has served in most offices\, including Division President as well as serving the Ohio State Board including a term as State Board President. Recently Roger has been selected President of newly formed Cuyahoga County Board\, Ancient Order of Hibernians. \nLong a tireless campaigner for Irish Human and Civil Rights\, he has been included in discussions with senior members of President Clinton’s Staff\, and the National Security Council. Roger led an active group of lobbyists working for legislative initiatives to support implementation of the MacBride Principles of Fair Employment for Northern Ireland. Roger was Co-founder of Ohio MacBride Principles Coalition. He was also instrumental in the introduction and passage of the Unite Ireland Resolution passed by the Cleveland City Council\, one of the first cities in America to pass this effort. \nOver the years Roger has held an active membership in\, and participated with many organizations\, Included are: Ancient Order of Hibernians; Cleveland’s Great Hunger Memorial Committee; Cleveland Heritage Foundation; Gaelic Athletic Association; Greater Cleveland Feis Society; Greater Cleveland Emerald Civic Society; West Side Irish American Club; Irish American Club – East Side; Irish Northern Aid Committee; the Ohio Irish Congress\, the Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival\, and has spoken to countless civic and professional organizations about Irish issues and history. And in 2016 was asked to co-host\, along with Tom Mulloy\, the broadcast of the Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Cleveland’s cable TV channel 20. \nRoger’s contributions to the promotion of our Irish culture\, history\, and traditions have been recognized by the community. In 1989 he was selected to be Co-Chairman of the Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Parade; 1990 voted Cleveland’s Irish Person of the year; 2000 Hibernian of the Year; 2001 recipient Irish American Partnership Citizenship Award; 2015 awarded Commodore John Barry Award by the AOH Ohio State Board\, and has also been awarded Life Membership in the Ancient Order of Hibernians. \nRoger has diligently served the Ancient Order of Hibernians Boland/Berry Division 2\, Cuyahoga County\, Ohio in almost all of the elected and appointed offices. He served as Marshal\, Standing Committee\, Division Organizer; Recording Secretary; Financial Secretary; Vice President; and President. He has also served as the AOH delegate to the United Irish Societies of Greater Cleveland (St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee) for many years. \nIn August\, 2016\, Roger was elected President of the newly formed Cuyahoga County Board to help guide the two AOH Divisions in Cuyahoga County. He has also served as the AOH Ohio State President\, Vice-President\, Treasurer\, Organizer\, Chairman of Political Education; Chairman of Freedom for All Ireland Committee\, and a variety of positions at the leisure of the sitting President. \nToday\, Roger continues his activism and promotion of all things Irish as Host/Programmer of Beyond the Pale Radio on WRUW FM 91.1\, Cleveland. He truly is an example of one who lives the motto of the AOH\, believing and living in “Friendship\, Unity and Christian Charity”.

SUMMARY:WRUW's 50th Birthday!
DESCRIPTION:In 1946\, WFSM was founded by the Flora Stone Mather Radio Club\, “broadcasting” via a public address system. Since that time\, it evolved into an AM carrier-current station (WRAR\, starting in 1955) and then (on February 26th\, 1967) to the FM broadcast station it is now. WRUW 91.1 FM began as a ten watt mono station serving the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland. WRUW gained stereo capability in 1974 and\, in 1980\, raised its power to 1\,000 watts. The evolution of WRUW was competed when\, on March 5th 2002\, WRUW increased its power to 15\,000 watts. WRUW now serves a large portion of the Northeast/Northern Ohio region\, from the Ohio/Pennsylvania border (to the east) to Toledo and parts of Michigan (to the west) and portions of Canada (to the north). \nOn Sunday\, February 26th WRUW will be celebrating our 50th anniversary! For our 50th birthday we have several days of special programming planned\, including #throwback episodes of The Cream of Broccoli Radio Hour and Sunday Matinee on February 26th\, 2017 focusing on music from the year the station went FM! Radio Child will be featuring a song for each year WRUW has been on the air! We are currently planning to present “WRUW Listens Back” with the help of alumni on-air programmers. It will be 24 hours of archived programming broken into one hour slices\, featuring past on air personalities as John E. Midnight\, Joe Riznar\, Cuzin’ Dave Newman\, Anne Weatherhead\, and Catherine Butler among many more. Please contact our alumni director James Szabo at wruwis50@wruw.org if you are a past WRUW staff member who would like to contribute.

SUMMARY:WRUW Remote Broadcast from the Transformer Station: Innov Gnawa
DESCRIPTION:Ohio City Stages is a weekly summer concert put on by the Cleveland Museum of Art. You can check the concert out or listen to it live on WRUW-FM. We will be broadcasting Innov Gnawa on the 27th. Learn More Here! \nInnov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus\, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer\, a Maâlem\, or master gnawa musician\, originally from Fes\, Morocco. Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities\, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues\,” gnawa music has a raw\, hypnotic power that has fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles\, jazz giant Randy Weston\, and rock god Jimi Hendrix. The music is utterly singular\, played on an array of unique instruments—from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune\, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering\, hypnotic rhythms. Innov Gnawa makes great use of this traditional repertoire\, and add their own\, contemporary spin with additional African and Latin percussion.
